New Internal Fit‑Out -
Bowl Central has expanded its footprint with a dynamic new venue in Reading. Following the success of its Bournemouth and Fareham locations, the brand turned to Rocare. They tasked our team with transforming a former musical instrument store into a custom entertainment space.
This project required a new shell fit-out, turning an empty unit into a multifunctional venue. It now includes bowling lanes, arcade games, interactive darts, and a fully equipped bar. Tight timelines, structural changes, and overseas equipment delivery created challenges. They needed a fit-out partner with strong planning skills and experience in live entertainment spaces.
Unfortunately, the project carried an additional weight. During construction, Bowl Central lost one of its directors, Tracy Standish. Despite the personal loss, the team remained focused on completing the vision. Rocare supported them with steady project management and their usual commitment to quality.
Site Constraints & Delivery Pressures
Turning the old musical instrument store in Reading into a high-performance entertainment venue came with a few major challenges:
- Interior Fit-Out: The existing unit had to be restructured to hold custom bowling lanes, bar facilities, and gaming areas.
- Time Pressure: The fit-out had to align precisely with the delivery of imported bowling equipment. Any delay could risk missing the launch date.
- System Coordination: Plumbing, electrical, and ventilation systems needed a complete overhaul to meet the venue’s multi-use demands.
- Zone Planning: Each area – bowling, darts, arcade, and bar – needed to work alone but still create a shared guest experience.
- Logistical Constraints: Work had to progress on-site while coordinating multiple specialist contractors, often in overlapping schedules.
Rocare worked hard to stay on schedule by ensuring good site coordination and fast communication with suppliers. This approach made sure the space was ready for each installation phase as planned.
Refurbishment Strategy & Execution
The programme included four weeks of demolition and strip-out, followed by a 22-week fit-out. This timeline needed precise timing for each trade, with no room for delays, especially before the overseas lane delivery.
To keep the build on track, Rocare delivered a structured, phase-by-phase solution:
- A full-time site team managed the project. They coordinated trades, handled sequencing, and resolved issues as they came up. This allowed installations to progress smoothly, even with overlapping deliveries and contractor schedules.
- Rocare teamed up with the international supplier to plan the imported bowling lanes precisely. The team scheduled the build starting from the delivery date. This ensured the site was ready for installation in all aspects.
- Each entertainment zone was set up to work independently, but they all aided the overall customer flow. Layout decisions were based on guest movement, acoustics, lighting demands, and operational needs.
- Technical infrastructure upgrades included complete M&E (mechanical and electrical) works. These upgrades support high-capacity systems. For example, lighting rigs, ventilation, plumbing, and integrated audio-visual setups.
- Finishes were selected for durability and impact. Every surface, light, and material supports a high-traffic environment. Bespoke joinery and feature lighting created an atmosphere without compromising durability.
Completed Leisure Venue Features & Brand Impact
Bowl Central in Reading was built to create an impact from the moment customers walk through the door.
The completed venue includes:
- 7-lane bowling alley
- Interactive darts and arcade zone
- Complete cocktail and bar
- Stone pizza oven and food service
- Pool tables and breakout areas
The layout was planned to support varied user types, from family visits during the day to evening social groups and private hires. Lighting, zoning, and finishes shift the mood across the day without needing structural changes.
The transformation also reflected Bowl Central’s evolving brand identity. Rocare’s leisure fit-out delivered a space that feels premium but accessible, modern but relaxed. The design encourages guests to stay longer, move between zones, and return often.
This third site strengthens Bowl Central’s status as a top leisure operator. Reading now joins Bournemouth and Fareham in its expanding estate. The new shell fit-out has helped set a benchmark for what future venues will deliver.
